Brazilian
Jiu jitsu
The history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be linked back to the days of Samurai in Japan (Ju-jitsu), where it was first developed as a form of self defence for those who found themselves a foot. It was then redeveloped in the 1800’s by Japanese Martial Artist Jigoro Kani at his Kodokan (Martial arts school), Jigoro would later go on to establish Judo. In 1914 a top student of the Kodokan, Mitsu Maeda found himself in Brazil befriending a local by the name of Gastão Gracie, he would later accept Gastão’s son Carlos Gracie as his student who would then go on to share his learnings with his brothers. Helios Gracie found the techniques of Judo were not suited to his size or lack of strength. Consequently he adjusted the techniques so that they could be applied to anyone no matter the size or strength, thus bringing forth what we know today as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a self-defence martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds. BJJ is often described as a sport of mental endurance. Unlike mainstream sports, BJJ is not about being the fittest or strongest person on the mats, it is a game of patience, perserverance and resilience. Our curriculum is delivered by Professor Rich under the guidance of Professor Steve.
KIDS
We currently offer Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) and Striking to youth (5 - 14).
They are both effective and engaging ways for our young people to get active and improve their fitness, flexibility, and coordination. In addition to the physical benefits, BJJ and striking can also help to reduce stress and anxiety, and improve mood and self-confidence.
By providing a safe and supportive environment for our young people to learn and practice these skills, we can instill skills that positively promote their wellbeing and growth.
Our team are passionate about helping our future generation become strong, confident, resilient and assertive members of our community.
